Often times, especially in rural areas, it's difficult if not impossible to use public transportation to get to work, go grocery shopping, and head to the park!
It can be difficult if not impossible to get around in neighborhoods without sufficient infrastructure! Parents don't want to let their children walk even five blocks to school alone if there are no sidewalks or crosswalks to travel safely near and on busy roads.
We all have different mobility abilities. Some of us grow up riding bikes and are comfortable biking on busy roads. Others have mobility challenges, such as walkers, wheelchairs, or are too young to know how to navigate busy roads. Consider traveling in your neighborhood imagining that you have a mobility challenge. How would your life be easier or harder based on the infrastructure around you?
Often, the organization of our communities makes it easier or harder to travel without a car because work, groceries, and exercise spots like community centers and parks are simply too far away.
